God willin' and the creek don't rise, I'm heading to Missouri in November to visit a little with sakorick, and maybe do some fishing and deer hunting.

Since I have an embarrassment of rifles from which to choose, the choice of which rifle to take was - as usual - not easy. However, it didn't take too much time to settle on the .338 MAI, (Mauser Ackley Improved), the brainchild of THL member Ol' John (AKA LLANO John). (John was actually the fellow that invited me to THL must be nigh on to 15 years ago.) John is also the maker of the rifle I now own. He made a pair of them on Mauser K-98 actions. Both have Lothar Walther barrels: His with 26" barrel, and mine with 24. I did the number crunching on the load development, and John did the gunsmithing.

I never have been able to get the rifle blooded. Maybe that can happen on this trip.

Below, you will find a list of threads discussing the .338 MAI project.

I could make it if I needed to. Fire-form 8x57 brass. .338 Bullets. .338 MAI dies are available "over the counter" from Hornady. RS Hunter Powder. Getting primers wouldn't be an issue. Ease of making ammo was one of John's criteria when he designed the cartridge. In a pinch, wouldn't even really need to fire-form brass first, just neck up to accept .338 bullet, charge, and fire.
