They suck. No, they REALLY do.
I'm going to be a week cleaning this mess up.
We have branches piled up around our derrieres.

Not terribly, just the back patio awning.
Looked later this morning and there's a 1.5" hole in it, with the pointy-broken end of a fir branch sticking through it.
It probably came down from about 40' up or so.
Better the awning than me or the dawg.
I'm amazed at how heavy 3' of Douglas Fir branch can be when each of its needles are buried/encapsulated in .25"-.5" of ice. That's a lotta ice!

We have some ice here now in northern Ky. but none in trees or such but on the ground between layers of light snow. We're under a winter storm advisory from tomorrow night until Wed. afternoon according to the monkeys at the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, Ohio. They only get it wrong 10 times out of nine. Supposed to get 4-8 inches of snow. ......Trees close to a house are a no-no. .......Paul H

Well, the well-worn refrains of "The Chainsaw Serenade" by Johann Sebastian Stihl are finally beginning to fade.
Unfortunately our little town has lost some of our oldest and most beautiful trees. While some were uprooted, many many more lost significant branches. Some to the extent that they're being removed altogether.

We discovered a 2" hole in our roof over the bathroom where a branch came through, that has now been patched. The bucket in the attic however, will remain there for the immediate future until I'm certain said patch is as effective as it's supposed to be.

My initial assessment has only been reinforced by the events of the last two days.
Ice storms DEFINITELY suck.
Very VERY destructive.

I hate to see old, majestic trees lost to storms. Even a completely destroyed house can be rebuilt. You can't rebuild a tree. To me, human deaths aside, trees are the greatest tragedies of storms.
