Default .338 Federal - AKA .338-08

Well, that wasn't too painful....

Some time ago, I put a "reminder" in at Midway on an Adams & Bennett Savage 110 barrel chambered in .338 Federal. Some of you may recall that when a friend of mine died a while back, he gave me his guns among which was a Savage 110. It has a 7mm Rem Mag bbl on it, and I don't really need another 7mm "magnum' of any sort. So I thought I'd swap it for something I was interested in like this .338-08.

While I was just recently here at THL wondering about the "need" for the new .30 Remington, this is a horse of a different color.

First, it isn't a "new" case, it's just a new caliber on an old case.

Second, that "old case" is one of my very favorites - .308 Wichester.

Third, bullets in the .338 caliber are excellent choices for North American big game.

Fourth, almost ANYTHING on the .308 Win case suits me. So, now I've got on coming in the mail.

Chambered in .308 Federal, threaded for the Savage 110, and nicely blued (at least in the pictures), I think $130 is a reasonable price. PO (Pre OBAMA), unchambered, un threaded and "in the white" A&B barrels ran $89 at Midway. $41 seems reasonable to have the chambering, threading to my action, and bluing done.

I have at least two or three million .338 bullets, and probably more .308 Win cases, so making rounds isn't gonna be a challenge. It would be nice if this barrel has a short throat. If it does, maybe I can find a use for thos Barnes 160's I have.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful." ~ C.S. Lewis.
